What to do before you buy a car

Purchasing a new vehicle can feel overwhelming, but with 92% of American households owning at least one vehicle, it is a task most people undertake. Before purchasing a car, there are aspects of ownership that should be explored prior to signing, to ensure a smooth and seamless purchase.

If there is current insurance coverage in place, the next step is going to be contacting that carrier or agent directly and asking for a quote. The vehicle’s identification number, or VIN, must be obtained to provide an accurate quote. There are other questions they will need answers to, like whether there is going to be a loan or lease in place and what the annual miles driven might be.

If you do not have auto insurance currently, become familiar with the insurance landscape. Currently, many insurance carriers in New Jersey will not take a risk without six months of preexisting insurance history. In this case the premiums may be very high and unexpected, even if there are no accidents or violations on record. Buyers should compile multiple rates prior to the finalization of the sale through agents and direct carriers.

Once quotes have been prepared, compare them to see if buying the vehicle is worth it, especially if it is being financed or leased. The combination between insurance and monthly payments can be stressful on the bank account, so be sure to research and do your due diligence before committing to a purchase. No one wants to get to the end of negotiations on a vehicle and realize they might be unable to afford the insurance for it!
